Larceny
When stealing money, a successful pickpocket attempt normally indicates that up to 3d4 coins have been stolen. These will be a random mixture of the coins the mark is carrying. This only applies if the distribution of wealth is not known, of course - for example, if a merchant carries all his money in a coinpurse and the thief cuts the strings, they will get all of his coin.
Below are given the general wealth levels of various members of society, as well as examples of what they might carry.
Lower Class
Peasants
Cost of Living: 0-3 gp/month
Monthly Income: 0-5 gp/month
Carried Wealth: 1d6 sp (mostly copper)
Peasants, as a rule, carry very little. If they are working or travelling from working, they may be carrying tools such as a pitchfork, axe, or scythe. If they are travelling, they are likely to possess an axe, club, quarterstaff or shortbow for protection. Besides this, they tend to only carry trifling items: a flint and steel, a small belt knife, and so on.
Commoners
Cost of Living: 5 gp/month
Monthly Income: 5-7 gp/month
Carried Wealth: 2d10 sp, 2d10 cp
Commoners tend to carry small, useful items like peasants do - flint and steel, belt knife, candle, fishook, et cetera. Commoners who work a trade will usually carry objects related to that; dock workers may carry rope, a logger may carry a hatchet, a fisherman will likely carry their nets and hooks with them. If these objects are light enough to place in a pouch or hang from a belt, they may carry them even when they are not working. Torches are also commonly carried.
Most commoners go armed due to the dangers of urban life. Daggers are the most common choice (90%); if the tool of their trade can be used as a weapon (i.e. an axe), they will carry this for protection. Less common are quarterstaves, clubs and slings (10%). It is unusual for a commoner to wear armor unless their work is dangerous - a caravan worker might wear leather or studded leather armor due to the dangers of the road, for example. In this case, they are more likely to carry more serious weapons such as spears, shortswords or bows/crossbows.
Thugs & Lowlifes
Cost of Living: 0-5 gp/month
Monthly Income: 0-10 gp/month
Carried Wealth: 2d20 sp
Shadier characters tend to go armed and ready for a fight. They will usually wear padded (60%), leather (30%) or studded leather (10%) armor. Weapons carried vary but tend to be relatively cheap, easy to conceal or swing in close quarters, and easy to use: clubs, crossbows, daggers, short swords, spears, axes and throwing knives are all popular choices.
These types may carry a wide variety of objects. Stolen objects such as silver or brass jewellery may be carried or worn; for wannabe thieves, rudimentary tools such as low-quality lockpicks, purse-razors and caltrops may be carried. Healing poultices, alcohol or food, and similar objects may also be carried. Extra knives and daggers, concealed or otherwise, are also very commmon.
